The One Idea You Need to Scale Your Agency from $1M to $15M+
What's the fastest way to build predictable revenue and scale your digital marketing agency. Here's one key strategy...
Ever wake up in the middle of the night worrying about how to keep your agency growing, leads coming in, sales converting, cash flow growing, etc…. You know all the things you need to do to grow and scale your business?
Here’s one idea I learned years ago that enabled me to scale my digital marketing agency by 1500%, and get to a point where I had too much time on my hands, which is one reason my partner and I sold it.
One summer, when I was in college, I was at my grandmother’s place on the coast of Maine along with my college roommate Rex. My grandmother had an aging 1948 Willys Jeep on the property and we’d decided it’d be fun to see what kind of trouble we could get into with this awesome 49 or 60 horsepower tough old vehicle.
There was only one problem.
When I hit the starter button, nada. It made a few weird noises, but after a winter of neglect, the rusty Jeep wouldn’t start.
My first reaction was just to move on and find something else to do. When I looked at the Jeep, I had no idea what to do. I just saw a hunk of presently useless metal.
Rex on the other hand, had a bit more knowledge about engines and before I walked away, stopped me and explained,
“It’s not that complicated to get one of these engines running again. It’s either a fuel problem or an electrical problem. We just have to figure out which it is and then we can fix it ourselves.”
With that mindset, we checked the battery, spark plugs, fuel lines, and fuel pump. After five minutes or so, we traced the problem to a dirty carburetor.
Sure, fixing it involved getting our hands dirty. But armed with a screwdriver and adjustable wrench, we had the old Jeep up and running in less than half an hour.
What’s the takeaway?
The Jeep we fixed, just like your agency or business is a closed system. In this case some basic knowledge about how the system works and the two key variables enabled us to get it up and running so we could go joy riding.
Your business is the same, it’s a system or set of systems. The key to scaling it is to understand each of the systems (marketing, sales, service delivery, operations, and finance) so you can fix and improve them.
You just need to know
- The steps involved and map them out from A - Z
- The variables that matter (yes it’s likely more than just two)
Take any of the following:
- Generating leads
- Converting leads to sales
- Providing benchmark services
- Simplifying operations
- Minimizing receivables
- Increasing motivation
- Maximizing client retention
- Etc
If you apply a systems approach, mapping out the steps and the variables that matter, you can improve each. Do that regularly and you’ll achieve steady growth with your digital marketing agency or business.
Current car engines are a lot more complicated than the 1949 Jeep that Rex and I got running. But don’t let that distract you. You can still diagnose your systems and fix or fine tune them to grow your agency, by a lot!
